Exploration two: Benjy Fournier

Hi, my name is Benjy Fournier.  My fun fact was that i can bench press 315lbs.  I am big in fitness and love to work out.  This is why I love my current job at Lifetime Fitness.  Outside of class, I am either working out or life guarding at lifetime, doing homework, or sleeping.
I researched Frances Harper.  The first interesting fact was that in 1850, Harper moved to Ohio which was a free state!  Francis was also a part of the American Equal Rights Association and the American Women's Suffrage Association.  This means that she worked for not only equal rights for colored people but for women too.  Lastly, Harper's work must mostly forgotten at first, but was later "rediscovered" in the late 20th century. http://womenshistory.about.com/od/francesewharper/p/frances_harper.htm

I was very impressed with the powerful passion displayed by Harper in the poem Bury Me in a Free Land.  She shows that she refuses to lay under walking slaves.  My favorite author I read today was actually Fredrick Douglas.  I very much enjoyed reading the piece from his autobiography.  His quick whits and natural ability to learn is incredible and inspiring to me.  It is amazing how he got the wife of his slave owner to teach him to write.  Also, the powerful and advanced language he displays is amazing when taking into consideration where he came from.  My only question is what other ways was Douglas able to fight his way out of slavery and into becoming a renowned author.

Looking back at Harper, The word I chose to research was galling.  The main reason I chose this word was because I have no idea what it means, even when looking at the word in context "as they bound afresh his galling chain."  This word mean chaffing or irritation.  Whats very interesting is that galling can mean this physically and metaphorically.  When looking back at the quote above, it's now clear that the chain was chaffing or hurting, and also irritating not only the body but the mind and spirit.  A beautifully chosen word to weave in where Harper did in the poem because of its two possible meanings.  The sentence I made with the word galling: The mother sits gallingly over her children, who look look mischievous and up to no good.

  1. First of all, if I ever need a personal body guard I know who to contact. Second, I enjoyed reading your second paragraph because I too wrote about that poem. Good job and I'm serious about the body guarding. We'll be in touch!

  2. I really liked your breakdown of the word "galling" I had no idea what that word meant either. It is impressive for you to be able to determine the word and then explore its meaning within the poem.

  3. Nice blog. Thats cool how you are into fitness and that will be great for your health in the long run. I have only been to Lifetime a few times, but it seems like a nice place. I used to be a lifeguard a few years ago, but I hated it so I stopped. Your choice word "galling" is a cool word that it basically has two meanings.

  5. Your last paragraph was interesting to me. I've never heard of the word "galling" but I use the words, and see others use the words chaffing or hurting all the time. It's interesting to me how it means the same thing but I've never heard of the word before. Cool to know.

  6. In your last paragraph when you explain the meaning of the word "galling", I really liked the fact that you provided insight as to how this word can be interpreted metaphorically and physically. Besides the fact that "galling" means to chafe or hurt, I really like how this word could be taken as hurting the mind & soul. The double meaning is interesting!

  7. You're a pretty big guy, I give you props for having the energy and power to work out as much as you do. Do you know what you want to do with your life? I'm thinking personal trainer. I love you love fitness though, it is a great quality to have since not many people in our generation are that intense about their health.

  8. Hey Benjy! I really like the word you chose! It's quite interesting. I like how you were able to go back into the poem and make more sense out of it because you knew what galling meant. It creates a whole new perspective to the piece. I also like the sentence you made up!
